Ducati Information at Horrible.Demon

Welcome!

Welcome to the Ducati pages at Horrible.Demon - a place where you can find some links and useful information about Ducati and also my current motorbike, a Ducati 748S.

The S model sits between the 748E (entry) and 748R (racing). It basically has a whole load of trick bits compared to the E (Showa forks/shock, grey 5 spoke Marchesini light-weight wheels, grey frame, etc) without the engine internals of the R.

I bought the 748S in January 2002 from a friend who had owned the bike from new for just over a year and a half. He had originally bought the 748 instead of an R6, but never got on with it and ended up buying a new R6 as well, so the Duke had to go.

The bike was a bargain and came with loads of trick bits already on it. I've also added a few bits and pieces, so the modification list includes:

  • 50mm Carbon Fibre Termignoni exhausts
  • Ducati Performance 50mm Race Pipes CPU
  • STM Evolutione 48t Slipper clutch
  • Carbon Fibre Airbox
  • Carbon Fibre Airtubes
  • Carbon Fibre rear hugger
  • Carbon Fibre swing-arm guard
  • Carbon Fibre heel guards
  • Carbon Fibre SPS-style exhaust guard
  • Carbon Fibre V-piece
  • TSS Quick Release rear-sprocket holder with 40t (+2t) rear sprocket
  • Tsubaki Omega X-Ring Gold chain
  • TecMoto Aluminium front sprocket cover
  • Sparco adjustable rearsets
  • Single seat unit with white number boards
  • Double-bubble tinted screen
  • el-cheapo plastic frame plugs (from Maplin)
  • DataTool LED RevLight (see below)
  • Matching red-painted mirrors
  • Black fasteners kit - screen, fairing and Dzus

Here are some (updated) pictures to give you a view of the bike:

Ducati On Tour!

This is a pic on the way out to France for the May Bank Holiday weekend. I fitted a Pyramid double-bubble screen and a Ventura luggage kit, both from Busters Accessories, to make it easier to tour.

The screen really does make a difference as it pushes the airflow over your head rather than it hitting you right in the face. Crouching behind the screen I saw 150mph on the speedo, but there was one hell of a headwind which meant I couldn't get it any higher.

Some more pics of the double-bubble screen, by popular demand!

Track Day: Snetterton
15th July 2002

These are some pics from the first track day I did on the 748. The V-twin is really weird on the track compared to an inline four or even the little RVF400 I did a previous track day on, and it took some getting used to - especially not locking the rear or making it hop like mad when changing down! The brakes are phenomenal though, giving so much feel and so much stopping power it was unbelievable.

As you can see, I'm still getting used to the lean of the bike (it's a long way!) and I also had two new BT010s on the bike. Still didn't GMKD and the chicken-strips are 2mm from the edge, but it will come!

How about a home-made Rev Light?
25th November 2002

I've decided to build my own LED rev counter, which you can find out all about on this page, mainly because I'm too tight to buy one, but also because it'll be a fun little winter project.

July 2004 - Long Time No Update

It's been nearly a year since the last page update here, mainly due to other projects and work getting in the way. To answer some questions:

  • No, I never did finish the LED Tacho but anyone should be able to turn the circuit into their own version with a little work...
  • The next project was creating carbon fibre which was really easy to do simple stuff then it got really tricky to do complex stuff ... and I kind of gave up at that point!
  • Changes to bike since last time:
    • JHP Slipper Clutch - aluminium 6-post ramp & bearing
    • Currently slipper clutch is now being replaced with an STM Evolutione 48-tooth slipper clutch
    • Carbon swing-arm guard (corse style)
    • TSS quick release rear sprocket hub and 40-tooth rear sprocket
    • Tsubaki Omega Gold X-Ring chain (96 link to match 40-tooth rear sprocket)
    • unknown-make rearsets for trackdays
    • Sparco (DP copy) black anodised rearsets to replace other rearsets
    • full service at TecMoto
    • Pipercross OEM-style replacement air filters from Demon-Tweeks
    • full set of trackday fairing donated by Jamie at Saxon Leaflets - see pics from Cadwell (link below) but this is what it looked like before I fixed and painted it!
    • Made a carbon clock surround to house the Datatool LED Rev light and mounted a small push switch in it to change the modes really easy ... see pics of fairing on link above
    • trackdays at Cadwell Park and Snetterton which included suspension setup (details to follow) and plenty of slider-grinding knee-down action on my 1.25s laps
    • Painted the OEM mirrors red using Plastikote Bright Red (#1120) which is a very close match
    • Carbon key-guard for the tank which is a pig to fit
    • other stuff I can't remember right now...

More later. Probably.

Oct 2004 - Quick Update

It went bounce, bounce, crunch, tinkle as it slid down the road :-(

First off in 5 years and I did quite well, but it's almost back in one piece. Unfortunately it was in the road kit which meant it's expensive in trying to replace the parts (new l/h fairing, top fairing, headlight, tank) but luckily I still have the trackday fairing which I needed for Rockingham track day on the 10th September! Checkout those pics - I now need a new set of sliders (both sides!) after just one day!

oh shit...

Brands 2004 - click for pics

March 2005

The racing has taken over, but I've still managed to do a trackday at Brands Hatch on the 748 as the DesmoDue racebike wasn't ready in time, and I needed to learn the track. They made me wear a bright yellow bib as it was my first time at Brands, but I think it was quite cool!

The Sparco adjustable rearsets worked a treat as I was running out of ground clearance round Clark Curve, coming onto the start/finish straight, and kept grinding my toe sliders. Moving the pegs up a touch fixed that. A good day with lots of other DSC members and racers in the DesmoDue series, plus I managed to learn the track quite well too.
